How to convert a PDF to LinkedIn carousel slides

A LinkedIn carousel is a document post. LinkedIn paginates a PDF, and each page is a slide people swipe. Converting a PDF into those slides means producing a new file whose pages were written as slides. Uploading the original report does the pagination, and it leaves every report page looking like a report page.

Boykli does the conversion in two passes. Create posts, Document mode, reads a text PDF, a Word file, or a Markdown file and writes one LinkedIn post from a single lesson. The carousel page then takes that lesson as a topic, up to 2,000 characters, and designs a new PDF: 2 to 8 slides, square or portrait, with a document title and a caption. You download that PDF or publish it on the personal profile you connect. The wider map of topic, idea, and file starts is LinkedIn carousel generator. This page is only the file path, and the decisions that path forces.

What has to be decided before any tool runs

A source PDF is usually the wrong shape for a swipe. A 12-page memo has a header, a table of contents, three arguments, an appendix, and a chart that only makes sense next to the paragraph under it. A carousel has a cover, a few claims, and a close. Someone has to throw most of the file away.

Four decisions sit in front of the layout:

  1. Which argument is the post. One deck, one point. A second argument is a second deck, created again.
  2. Which sentences are allowed to survive. A number that is not in the file does not get invented on a slide to make the layout look finished.
  3. How many pages the new PDF should have. Boykli stops the form at 8. A cover, the steps, and a close often fit in 5 to 7.
  4. Whether the original pages are the design. If they already are slides, publish that file. The carousel page does not import an existing PDF as pages.

The product was built so that cut stays with the person whose name is on the post. The longer version of that choice is building Boykli.

Four ways people convert a file

MethodWhat LinkedIn receivesWhat you keep from the sourceWhere it breaks
Upload the original PDF as a LinkedIn documentThe same pages, paginatedEvery page, including headers, footers, and appendicesA memo page is not a slide. Type is small. The swipe has no cover and no close
Screenshot each page, or rebuild the pages in a template toolA new PDF or a set of images, depending on the toolThe layout you redrawSlow, and a chart that was an image in the source still has to be redrawn. Boykli slides are HTML and CSS, so this is a different job
Paste the whole file into a general chat and ask for "8 slides"Whatever you then paste into a design toolWhatever the chat keptThe chat will summarize everything and often add a number that was not in the PDF. You still have to design and upload
Boykli Document mode, then the carousel pageA new PDF, 2–8 slides, plus a captionOne lesson you accepted, then the outline you pasted into the topicThe original pages are not the slides. A scanned PDF with no text layer fails before a post exists

The last row is the workflow below. The first row is what people do when they treat "PDF" and "carousel" as the same file. LinkedIn will accept that upload. The feed will show a document. It will not show a deck that was written to be swiped.

Convert a PDF into a deck

Document mode pulls one lesson from the file. The carousel page designs the PDF. BYOK is $29/month. Managed is $88/month.

What the extractor actually keeps

On Create posts, Document mode accepts .pdf, .docx, and .md. The file must be 7 MB or smaller. After parsing, the text must be 80,000 characters or fewer, and it must contain at least 80 non-whitespace characters. Below that, the API refuses the file: a scanned PDF, a photo of a page, or an empty export has no text layer for pdf-parse to read. There is no OCR step. Export a text-based PDF, or paste the words into a .docx or .md, and upload that.

What comes out of a text PDF is a string. Headings often survive as lines. Reading order follows the PDF text operators, which is usually fine for a single-column memo and messy for a two-column layout, a footer repeated on every page, or a slide deck that was exported with text boxes in a strange order. Charts, photos, and logos do not become images on the later carousel. If a number matters, it has to be in the extracted text, and you have to see it in the draft.

The writer is instructed to amplify one idea. If you fill Optional Idea / Brief, that brief picks the section. "Use the pricing section. Ignore the roadmap." is a brief. An empty brief asks for the single strongest lesson in the whole file. The post is 700 to 1,400 characters. It does not say "the document" or "this report." It does not add hashtags, emoji, or a statistic that was not in the extract. Tones on this mode are Teach & Explain, Analytical, Step-by-Step, and Thought Leader. You can refine that draft twice. A third pass is a new write.

That post is a filter, not the slides. The carousel form is a text box. It does not take a file upload. You copy the lesson, or a tighter outline of it, into the topic.

A worked teardown

Source: a 9-page internal memo, text PDF, 1.4 MB, about a support team's first-response time. Page 1 is the ask. Pages 2–4 are the weekly numbers. Page 5 is the change that moved the median from 6 hours to 90 minutes. Pages 6–9 are the rollout checklist and an appendix of ticket tags.

A raw upload to LinkedIn would swipe through the appendix. That is a failed carousel that still "converted."

Pass 1, on Create posts:

  1. Document mode. Upload the PDF.
  2. Brief: "Only the change on page 5. Keep the 6 hours and 90 minutes. Skip the tag appendix."
  3. Tone: Step-by-Step, because the useful shape is the sequence of the change, not a tour of the whole memo.
  4. Write. Read the 700–1,400 character post. If 6 hours became "about a day," the extract or the brief was too loose. Fix the brief and refine, or write again. Two refinements are the limit on that draft.
  5. The accepted lesson is one paragraph you would say in a meeting: what changed, the two numbers, the order of the steps. That paragraph is the only material the slides are allowed to know.

Pass 2, on the carousel page:

  1. Paste an outline, not the entire post and not the memo. A topic that works: "Cover: first response went from 6 hours to 90 minutes. Slide 2: the queue rule we removed. Slide 3: who owns the first reply. Slide 4: the cutoff we added. Slide 5: what we still measure. Close: the one rule to copy. Do not add other numbers."
  2. Tone: Normal. Humor would treat the memo as a joke.
  3. Slide count: 6, matching the outline. Default is 5. The form allows 2 through 8.
  4. Shape: Portrait, 1080 by 1350, because each step is two short lines plus a label. Square is 1080 by 1080 when the line is a card.
  5. Design: Infographic / Data Guide for a sequence of steps. Neo-Brutalist is the default when you want the deck to look less like a report. If brand-kit colors are on, the only design available is Normal. The other seven stay disabled until brand colors are off.
  6. Model: Grok 4.6 is the default. The picker also offers Gemini 3.5 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra. Create posts does not use this picker. Document mode writes with the post model. The deck uses the carousel model. That split is the same one described on the post generator page.
  7. Create. A large deck can take a few minutes. The page stops the attempt at about eight minutes.
  8. Read every slide against the memo. The prompt tells the model not to invent statistics. It still writes the lines. A third number that was not in the topic is a failed deck. Change the topic and create again. That is a new carousel generation. There is no per-box editor.
  9. Set the document title, up to 120 characters. LinkedIn shows it as the name of the PDF. The prompt aims for a short title, about 4 to 10 words. The caption is separate, up to 3,000 characters, and it is the commentary in the feed. The title is required when you add the PDF to the queue.
  10. Download the PDF, post it now, or queue it. Publishing uses the personal profile from LinkedIn OAuth. Company pages are outside the product. How the queue takes the next open slot is in Schedule LinkedIn posts.

The file you publish is the new PDF. The memo stays in your library as the text post, if you saved that draft. They are different records.

Eight is a ceiling, not a goal. Density on a slide is also capped in the prompt: about five bullets or four cards, body type at 21px or larger on the square canvas. A topic that says "put the whole checklist on slide 3" produces a cramped slide or a dropped line. Split the checklist across slides in the outline.

Series mode on Create posts is the other long-source tool. It writes several text posts from source text. It does not emit several carousel PDFs. One deck is one create.

The order of operations

  1. Confirm the PDF has a text layer. Open it and search for a sentence you know is there. If search finds nothing, it is a scan. Boykli will reject it once the readable text is under 80 characters.
  2. Trim the file under 7 MB and under 80,000 characters of extracted text. A long appendix you do not want can be deleted in the export before upload, which is cleaner than hoping the brief ignores it.
  3. On Create posts, choose Document. Upload .pdf, .docx, or .md.
  4. Write the brief as a cut, not as a vibe. Name the section, the claim, and the numbers to keep.
  5. Pick the document tone. Step-by-Step for a procedure. Analytical when the point is the comparison in the file. Teach & Explain for a framework. Thought Leader when the point is the implication, still using only what the file supports.
  6. Read the post. Refine at most twice. If the lesson is wrong, the slides will be a polished version of the wrong lesson.
  7. Rewrite the lesson as a slide outline in the carousel topic. Name the cover and the close. Stay inside 2,000 characters.
  8. Set Normal or Humor, ratio, design, model, and slide count. Save the brand kit first if you changed canvas, accent, logo, photo, or handle. An unsaved kit blocks create. Author strip and logo are toggles. The generator does not invent a handle.
  9. Create, then read the slides against the source. Download or publish only after that read.
  10. Title, caption, then the personal profile: post now or add to the queue. The document-specific path, including why LinkedIn's composer often has no clock on a PDF and what the slot actually sends, is in How to schedule a PDF on LinkedIn.

Managed includes 210 posts and 150 carousels in the month, plus 150 images, 25 Voice Agent sessions, and 130 post refinements. The document post counts as a post. The carousel create counts as a carousel. Downloading the same PDF again does not. BYOK is the same screens with your OpenRouter key for chat and images and your Google AI Studio key for Voice Agent, and Boykli does not add a generation cap on that seat. You still pay those providers. Both seats are $29 and $88 a month on boykli.com. A paid seat is required before the app will write, create a carousel, publish, or schedule. Browsing Radar and Algorithm is open without one.

FAQ

Can I drop the PDF on the carousel page?

The carousel page takes a topic. The file goes to Create posts, Document mode. The PDF you download afterward is a new slide deck, which is the file LinkedIn publishes as the document post.

Why did my PDF fail with no slides at all?

The usual causes are size over 7 MB, extracted text over 80,000 characters, a file that is not .pdf, .docx, or .md, or a scan with fewer than 80 readable characters. Export a text PDF or paste the words into Word or Markdown. The carousel is a later step, so a failed extract never reaches the design.

Will the charts and screenshots in the PDF show up on the slides?

No. Extraction is text. Slides are HTML and CSS: type, shapes, gradients, and SVG. A photograph is not placed on a slide. If a figure matters, write the claim it supports into the topic, in words, and only if that claim is actually in the file.

The source is already a 10-page slide deck. Can Boykli reflow it?

Ten designed pages are already a PDF LinkedIn can paginate, and this form stops at 8 slides anyway. Rebuilding them means picking one argument, running Document mode, and designing a shorter deck. Use the original file if the original pages are what you want to publish. A pitch deck and a whitepaper each need a different cut before that rebuild. That walkthrough is How to convert pitch decks and whitepapers to LinkedIn slides.

Can one PDF become several carousels?

Yes, as separate creates. Each pass through Document mode is one post about one idea. Each carousel topic is one deck. Series mode writes multiple text posts and does not build the PDFs.

How do I change a sentence on slide 4?

Edit the document title and the caption in place. Slide copy is part of the generated design. Change the topic and create again. That new create counts toward the Managed carousel cap, or toward your provider usage on BYOK.

What do I pay to run this?

The seat is $29 a month on BYOK or $88 a month on Managed. Managed includes 150 carousel generations and 210 posts in the month. BYOK has no Boykli monthly cap. The document write and the carousel create are both gated by the seat.

Can I queue the new PDF?

Yes, on the personal profile you connect. The queue asks for a document title. You set the days, the time of day, and the timezone. The next item takes the next open slot. It does not post as a company page.

Start from the file
